Best Ski Resorts from Prague: Complete Guide 2026/27
Prague is surprisingly well-positioned for skiing: Czech Giant Mountains are just 2h away, Slovakia's High Tatras 4h30, and Austrian Alps 4h-5h by car. Here's the complete guide for Prague-based skiers — from local beginner slopes to serious Alpine terrain.
Prague sits at the western edge of Central Europe's skiing zone. While Czech skiing is modest in scale, Austrian and Slovak resorts give Prague skiers access to genuinely excellent terrain within a half-day drive.
Closest skiing — Czech Republic (1h30-2h30)
The Krkonoše (Giant Mountains) and Šumava on the German border offer the closest skiing to Prague:
- Špindlerův Mlýn: 2h from Prague. The most popular Czech resort with 40km of pistes up to 1,310m. Family-friendly, good for beginners to intermediates. Ski pass ~30-35 €/day.
- Janské Lázně: 2h. Small but charming, with the only gondola in the Czech Republic. 20km of pistes.
- Harrachov: 2h. Ski jumps and 15km of alpine pistes. More for enthusiasts.
- Lipno: 2h30 (Šumava). Flat terrain near a reservoir, excellent for families and beginners.
Realistic expectations: Czech resorts are great for weekend trips and beginners but not serious ski weeks — altitudes are relatively low (max 1,600m) and snowfall can be unreliable.
Slovakia — best value from Prague (4h-5h)
Slovak resorts offer excellent value and more serious terrain:
- Jasná (Low Tatras): 4h30 from Prague. Slovakia's flagship resort with 50km of pistes, top at 2,024m. Very good snow record thanks to altitude. Ski pass ~40-50 €/day — excellent value for a resort of this size.
- Tatranská Lomnica / Starý Smokovec: 5h (High Tatras). Multiple linked resorts under the dramatic High Tatra peaks. Smaller terrain but spectacular scenery.
- Donovaly: 4h. Good mid-size Slovak resort, family-friendly.
Austria — full Alpine experience from Prague (4h-5h)
For proper Austrian Alps skiing:
- Saalbach-Hinterglemm: 4h30. 270km of linked pistes, one of Austria's best all-round resorts.
- Zell am See / Kaprun: 4h30. Kitzsteinhorn glacier (3,029m) means skiing possible from October. Great early-season option.
- Schladming: 4h. Home of the Night Race, 230km of excellent intermediate terrain.
- Kitzbühel: 5h. World-famous, historic town, challenging terrain.
By train from Prague
For Austrian resorts: Czech Railways (ČD) and ÖBB connect Prague to Salzburg (~4h30) and Vienna (~4h). From Salzburg, ski buses reach Saalbach and other resorts. From Vienna, connections to Schladming and other Styrian resorts.
